Show and Tell Questions

The following are the “Show me tell me” questions you need to know to pass your test.

1 Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working? Apply Hazard warning switch and check functioning of indicators.
2 Tell how you would check the brakes are working? Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes to be tested as you move off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
3 Identify windscreen washer reservoir is, and tell me how you would check the level. Identify and explain.
4 Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car? Switch ignition on, press the brake pedal and make use of reflections in garage doors or windows. On test examiner will check from behind car.
5 Show/explain how you would check the power steering is working before starting a journey? If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working. Two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering maintained while the engine is started should result in a slight but noticeable movement. Alternatively moving steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the system is working.
6 Tell me where you would find the information for the correct tyre pressures for this car and how the pressures should be checked. Manufacturers guide and check them with a reliable pressure gauge when tyres are cold.
7 Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear? Apply footbrake. Demonstrate by applying handbrake and making sure it secures itself before reaching the end of its travel.
8 Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil and tell me how you would check the level? Identify dipstick and describe check on max/min markers.
9 Open the bonnet and show where you would check the coolant level and tell who you would check it? Identify header tank and show max/min lines.
10 Tell how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted to best protect you in the event of a crash? The rigid part of the head restraint should be at least as high as the top of your ears or your eye level adn as close the back of head as comfortable.
11 Open bonnet and identify where you would check the brake fluid level and tell how you would check the level. Identify the reservoir and check level on the max/min lines.
12 Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road? No cuts or bulges. 1.6 mm or tread across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the complete circumference.
13 Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the washers and wipers? Operate the control to wash and wipe the screen.
14 Tell me how you would check the head and tail lights are working? Explain that you would switch the ignition on then the lights and walk around the vehicle checking the lights.
15 Show me how you would set the demister controls do demist the front and rear screens. Set all relevant controls including; Fan, temperature and air direction and heated screen to demist the windows.
16 Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and you would use them? Operate switch (turn on dipped head lights) and check warning light is on. Describe only to be used when visibility is less than 100 metres.
17 Tell me how you would know there was a problem with you antilock braking system. A warning light would appear on the dash board.
18 Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and how you would know when main beam was on? Operate switch and show and check main beam warning light.
